The lead photo that stands out in a grid
On a search results page every listing shows its best daylight photo. A twilight image, with warm windows and a blue sky, looks different from everything around it, and that difference is the reason to add one to a listing package. It also shows things daylight hides: exterior lighting, a lit pool, the city lights from a view home, the glow of a deck on a summer evening.
Twilight is not the same as night. The useful window starts shortly after sunset, when the sky is still bright enough to hold colour and detail, and lasts until the sky turns black. Photographers call it the blue hour, though it is rarely an hour. On Vancouver Island the timing shifts a lot through the year, from late afternoon in December to late evening in June, so the booking follows the calendar, not a fixed time.
How a twilight shoot runs
Pick the evening
Look at the forecast, the direction the house faces and the sunset time. A clear or lightly clouded sky gives colour; heavy overcast gives flat grey. Keep a backup evening.
Arrive before sunset
The photographer sets up the first positions while it is still light, so no minutes are lost when the window opens.
Light the house
Every interior light on, blinds open, exterior and landscape lights on, fireplace lit if there is one. Warm bulbs throughout look far better than a mix of colours.
Shoot in a sequence
Usually the front first, then the back or the view side, then the aerials while the sky still holds colour. Each position is shot at several exposures to blend later.
Fly the twilight aerials
A few high views that show the lit house in its setting, flown within the rules for flight near or after sunset.
Edit and review
Exposures are blended to keep the sky and the lit windows balanced. You pick the finals in the project.
Twilight prep checklist
- Replace dead bulbs inside and out, and use the same warm colour throughout.
- Turn on every light, including under-cabinet, pot lights, exterior, landscape, pool and deck lights.
- Open all blinds and curtains that face the camera.
- Remove cars from the driveway and the street in front if you can.
- Light the fireplace or firepit if the owner is comfortable with it.
- Clear the deck of covers, bins and hoses. They show up more at dusk, not less.
- Tell us if a neighbour's security light points toward the house; it can be managed in framing.

Twilight for commercial and hospitality
Hotels, restaurants, wineries and retail centres often look their best after dark, when signage, patios and landscape lighting are on. Can a drone fly at night in Canada?
Yes. Certified pilots can fly at night under the Transport Canada rules if the drone has lighting that keeps it visible and the flight meets the other rules. Check the current Canadian rules before planning a night flight.
Can a drone fly at dusk in the United States?
Yes, under Part 107, with anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles during civil twilight and at night. The pilot must have completed current training that covers night operations; see US drone rules.
Is virtual twilight allowed on the MLS?
Many boards allow edited dusk images, but any edit that misrepresents the property can breach advertising rules. Keep it honest and follow your board's and regulator's rules on disclosing altered images. Real twilight avoids the question.
What if it rains on the twilight shoot?
Most twilight shoots are rescheduled for rain or heavy overcast. Wet pavement after rain can look good, but it needs a clear sky above. Book a backup evening.
